Monty reveals new Celtic Manor design

Colin Montgomerie has unveiled the design of his new course at the Celtic Manor Resort, venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. The Montgomerie will be the third championship standard course at the resort.

European Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie (pictured) has revealed the course plan and design for the new course that he has been commissioned to design at one of Britain's foremost hotel and leisure complexes, the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales.

The Montgomerie is a 6,369 yard par 69, and is being created on land that has previously featured on the Academy Course and the pre-Ryder Cup layout of the Wentwood Hills course. The course, scheduled to open in the summer of 2007, will feature deep pot bunkers and dramatic tee shots over the numerous valleys that feature on the land. Two long par 5s, a number of short par 4s and several testing par 3s will make the course a real test of any golfer's all round game.

"I hope that The Montgomerie will become as popular with golfers as the Wentwood Hills course has been and the Roman Road course continues to be," Montgomerie said.

"I've certainly enjoyed playing in the Celtic Manor Wales Open for the past four years on both of those courses and I know the players really enjoy coming to play at the resort because of the quality of the courses and the facilities."

"My design for The Montgomerie will provide a different challenge to the other two courses and it will present a distictive test. The fact that the Ryder Cup course for 2010 will also open next summer means the resort is going to provide a varied challenge to its members and visitors in the years to come."

The re-modelled Wentwood Hills layout will become the Ryder Cup course, the first to have been specifically designed for the tournament, and will open next summer to sit alongside The Montgomerie and the Roman Road course, which has been the venue for the 2005 and 2006 Celtic Manor Wales Open and the 2006 Junior Ryder Cup.
