Stanford St Jude Championship Preview

This well-established event plays host to one of the strongest fields in its history although Phil Mickelson has withdrawn to rest a sore wrist before next week's US Open.

Tournament: Stanford St Jude Championship

Course: TPC at Southwind

Prize fund: $6,000,000

Course details: par 70, 7,244 yards. The tournament, which celebrates its 50th year on the PGA Tour in 2007, first visited the Tennessee course in 1989. Eight lakes and three streams come into play on 11 holes

Key hole: The 231-yard par-3 14th is one of the most difficult short holes on the Tour. Water protects the entire right-hand side of the putting surface which also features a large slope at its centre.

The lowdown: A strong field visits TPC Southwind this week. Although Players champion Phil Mickelson has withdrawn due to a sore wrist, number four in the world Adam Scott, Retief Goosen (10th), Padraig Harrington (11th) and Sergio Garcia (12th) make their debuts in the event. While Jeff Maggert defends his title, the favourite could well be fellow-American David Tom. The former USPGA champion has a great record, including two victories in the past five years.

The contenders: Adam Scott, David Toms.
