Key technology:

A titanium head is classic in shape and designed to appeal to the better player. The head sits slightly open at address and is intended to offer workability for those who strike it consistently. Internal weighting is designed to improve the flight on shots that miss the middle of the club high or low on the face compared to the MP Ti fairway wood.

Will suit: those who want a compact, traditional fairway wood and confident players wanting to work the ball.

Verdict

GM verdict: Current trends in fairway wood design have followed drivers in that many offerings are lightweight or adjustable. The Mizuno MP-650 bucks those trends and is the most traditional-looking fairway wood to be released this year. It looks beautiful at address. Engineers at Mizuno say there is no adjustability because it would affect the impact sound. But... players who need plenty of forgiveness will want a bigger head. A club specifically for the confident player. PGA Pro verdict: This head design will attract many of the more established players. The traditional pear-shaped head design sat slightly open at address and this gave the feel of an anti-left flight and performed in exactly that fashion. It gave a lower and more penetrating flight, slightly left to right, which would suit the many players that fear the left side of the course on long shots. A solid feeling at impact is superb. This suits the traditional image that Mizuno has built around quality and performance. Test Team rating: Performance: 3.5/5 Visual appeal: 4.5/5 Innovation: 3/5 Value: 3.5 Overall: 4/5
