The deep cavity-back design should offer game-improvement levels of forgiveness, but with the added benefit of a stylish, compact appearance at address. Nike’s NexCOR face technology, which has been used in previous VR_S irons, is designed to produce faster ball speeds and longer shots from a wider area of the face.
Will suit… players who want to look down on a smart head, but who still require forgiveness.
GM verdict: Those that might have been put off by seeing the deep cavity design online or in magazines should try this impressive set before casting judgement. As you can see (above), the address position is smart and compact, which is impressive for a cavity design. The forgiveness is superb, as is the high flight and distance on offer through the set. These irons will suit those who prefer a smart head design, but who still require plenty of forgiveness through the bag. But... the cavity design doesn't look great on the shelf or in the bag. PGA pro verdict: I found these irons difficult to put down! Having started with the short irons, I noticed increases in distance and launch trajectory compared to other sets, which filled me with confidence. The feel-good factor increased once more after trying the long irons. I was impressed with the ease of use, consistency and yardage. The strike gave a slightly higher pitch sound on impact, which enhanced the experience and gave the impression that the ball speed was faster and more powerful. I would have no hesitation in recommending these irons to any player looking to improve both yardage and consistency through the whole set.
