Freddie's ready

Fred Couples is representing the over 50s with some aplomb in this year's Masters and he's keen to keep his run going over the weekend.

Fred Couples

What an exciting day it's turning out to be here. 21-year-old Rory McIlroy is making further progress - he still hasn't dropped a shot at the time of writing. 30 years McIlroy's senior, Freddie Couples has raced up the leaderboard with a second round 68. These days it always seems at least one of the veterans makes a run in a Major.

Fred's just been in the interview room and was being very philosophical about his chances. Rick Reilly asked him, "If Jack Nicklaus' victory in 1986 was unbelievable, what if you were to win at 51?" Fred grinned and said, "It would be the biggest upset in golfing history."

He's confident his bad back is going to hold up and he said, "If there's one Tour event I could still win, I guess it would be this one."

Rickie Fowler is making a charge up the board as well and Luke Donald has climbed through the field with an excellent 68. There's an air of anticipation around the place as the cut and the business end of the tournament approaches.

The projected cut is currently +1 and, as I write Graeme McDowell and Martin Laird are right on the bubble while Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els and Francesco Molinari all have work to do if theyr'e going to be here for the weekend.
