Webb Simpson wins Deutsche Bank Championship

American moves to the top of the FedEx Cup standings after beating Chez Reavie on the second play-off hole in the Deutsche Bank Championship to claim his second tour victory in three weeks

Webb Simpson has won the Deutsche Bank Championship after beating Chez Reavie in a play-off.

Reavie had gone into the 72nd hole of the tournament with a one shot lead and seemed destined for the trophy.

When Webb Simpson, who was playing three groups in front of Reavie, holed a 25-foot putt for birdie on the last hole, it still looked as though his final round 65 wouldn't be enough to win.

At the par 5 18th hole, Reavie laid up with his second shot before pulling a wedge into the rough on the left-hand side of the green and went on to make bogey.

The pressure had told and the pair went to a sudden-death play-off.

At the first play-off hole, the 18th, both players went for the green in two and found the rough to the left of the green.

Reavie appeared to be in better shape at this stage and certainly was when Simpson could only get his ball to 15-feet from the hole while Reavie had his within 5 feet.

Simpson would again hole a long putt for birdie at the last leaving Reavie with a nervy putt to take them to the 17th tee. He held his nerve this time and they headed to the next hole.

Of the two players, Reavie had bettered Simpson on the 17th hole over the four rounds. While Simpson had parred it four times, Reavie had made two birdies and two pars.

Both found the fairway with their drives. Simpson then struck his a magnificent approach to inside ten feet. Reavie had to attack the pin but left it a bit to the right of the flag and would have a 20-foot putt.

His putt narrowly missed the hole giving Simpson the chance to win the tournament with an 8-foot putt for birdie.

Once again the belly putter worked for Simpson and he rolled in the putt to claim the title and move into 1st place in the FedEx Cup standings.

After winning his second competition in three weeks, the 26-year-old said: "I told somebody that winning for a second time might be easier, but it was tough."

England's Luke Donald will be disappointed not to have at least made the play-off after he started his round superbly and was tied for the lead going into the back nine.

However a disastrous double-bogey at the 12th derailed his hopes. He pushed his second shot right of the green and then fluffed the first chip leaving it in the rough. With the second chip, he came out heavy and found himself in the rough on the other side of the green. Eventually he chipped on and holed out but the damage had been done.

Another bogey at the 16th meant his chances were effectively over, barring a miraculous final two holes.

The world number one ended up finishing two shots off the lead on 13-under-par and tied for third with Brandt Snedeker and Jason Day. It is the 11th time in his last 15 events that the Englishman has finished in the top 10.

Overnight leader Bubba Watson struck a final round 74 to fall back into the main pack but did finish with a smile after holing a long putt at the last for eagle.

Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell will be disappointed today as both are now out of the FedEx Cup after their positions in Boston meant they dropped out of the top 70.

McDowell will be particularly annoyed after bogeying the 17th and then missing a short birdie putt at the last to miss out by three places in the points table.

The top 70 will now go on to next week's BMW Championship in Illinois where the top 30 will qualify for the Tour Championship final in Atlanta.
