American Matt Kuchar has won the PGA Tour's Turning Stone Championship at Atunyote, after returning to the course on Monday to defeat compatriot Vaughn Taylor in a play-off.

Kuchar eventually triumphed after an epic play-off to win the Turning Stone Championship on the sixth hole on Monday.

After 72 holes and two extra holes, play was suspended on Sunday. Taylor did not let his fellow countryman take the title easily and they returned to action on Monday to do battle in poor weather conditions once again, going a further four holes.

However, Taylor's double bogey on 13 after a trip to the water meant that Kuchar's par was good enough for the win and the $1.08 million winner's cheque.

It was Kuchar's first win in seven years after his victory at the 2002 Honda Classic, which came as some relief: "To battle so hard was pretty special," Kuchar said. "There's nothing better than coming out on top after a week of golf.

"It feels great. To be able to come out on top is really special. It's hard to believe it has been since 2002. The game of golf can just reach out and beat you up."
