Best Putters 2020

Widely renowned as the most important club in the bag, the putter is where countless shots can be saved. Therefore finding the right one for you is imperative and because there are so many options and styles to choose from, we have put together this handy guide to tell you the best putters 2020 has to offer.

Many manufacturers are actually reducing the number of head shapes in their ranges and focusing on improved looks, feel and roll from their more compact collections.

Of course, there is still the choice to be made between a blade, mid-mallet or mallet. Blade style putters tend to suit ‘feel’ players with a stronger arc to their putting stroke, moving up into mallets that suit golfers who require extra alignment assistance and/or have much less rotation in their putting stroke.

This, however, is not a hard and fast rule – much of your final decision should be based on what suits your eye and feels good in your hands. Only that way will you gain the confidence you need to hole the putts you want to.

Remember other variations of putter design like counter balanced versions, which feature a heavier head and grip to increase overall stability and promote a smoother tempo.

Scotty Cameron Special Select

Key Tech: These eight classic, tour-inspired shapes feature thinner and flatter toplines, refined neck configurations, soft tri-soles and performance-balanced weighting. Visually, you’ll notice the hand-painted cherry rings and a glare-resistant finish.

GM Verdict: Incredibly pure, crisp feel from a well balanced, elegant putter that allows you to be positive on the greens. Option of adjustable weights to fine-tune the flow. It’s expensive, but probably our favourite putter in 2020.

TaylorMade TP Patina

TaylorMade TP Patina Putters Review

Key Tech: The range gets its name from the new Patina finish that combines black nickel and copper properties to create a rich, clean and unique look that oxidises over time. The putters come with a new aluminium Pure Roll TP insert which is 2mm thicker than previous inserts to offer improved sound and feel off the face whilst also optimising roll. The TP screws fasten this new insert in place and create a solid feel at impact.

GM Verdict: Ideal for golfers seeking reliable performance without the premium price tag. A nice mix of modern, forgiving mallets and classic blade shapes while many with gravitate towards the wide blade design for it’s all-round performance.

Odyssey Stroke Lab Black

Key Tech: Five more shapes in addition to the Ten and Bird of Prey all boast the Microhinge Star insert and Stroke Lab shaft that improves consistency of backswing length, face angle at impact, head speed and tempo.

GM Verdict: Arguably the easiest putter to align and offers best-in-class roll off the face with a mid-to-soft feel. Stroke Lab shaft certainly seemed to help with timing and consistency from longer range.

TaylorMade Truss

TaylorMade Truss Putters Revealed

TaylorMade Truss Putters review

Key Tech: The new Truss design is engineered for less twisting thanks to two connection points from the hosel into the head. The increase in stiffness also improves feel. Comes in four head shapes with adjustable sole weights.

GM Verdict: May put some people off visually but the TB1 will be one of the most forgiving blade putters you can find and rolls the ball really well. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, as this putter performs.

GM Verdict: A firm feel off the face will suit golfers that tend to use a soft feeling ball. Nice mix of shapes in the range that stand out on the shelf and offer ample forgiveness and speed. Adjustable length will help golfers optimise posture.

Axis1 Rose

Key Tech: Axis1’s patented unique technology places the center of gravity exactly in the center of the striking face and in-line with the Axis of the shaft which is said to create a perfectly balanced putter. This also helps keep the putter square at address and stops rotation throughout the swing and impact.

GM Verdict: Impressive forgiveness, helped by the face seemingly wanting to square up naturally once we got used to how it flowed. But it’s expensive (£449), it does have an unusual look and sounds quite hollow and tinny.

Odyssey Stroke Lab Triple Track

Odyssey Stroke Lab Triple Track Putters Review

Odyssey Stroke Lab Triple Track Putters Review

Key Tech: The three lines utilise Vernier Hyper Acuity, the same technology used to land planes on aircraft carriers, to improve alignment. The Stroke Lab shaft improves stroke tempo and consistency, the Microhinge Star insert creates a firmer feel and better roll. Comes in five shapes.

GM Verdict: Unquestionably one of the most vivid and effective alignment systems, especially if you combine it with a Callaway Triple Track ball. Some may find it distracting, but it is certainly worth a try if you struggle from short range.

Odyssey Toulon Design

Key Tech: Coming under the Odyssey umbrella, Toulon Design putters are a premium line that features seven models – five blades (Madison, Austin, Columbus, Long Island and San Diego) and two face-balanced mallets (Memphis and Indianapolis) said to benefit from the best materials, craftsmanship, visual appeal and technology. The new Deep Diamond Mill face pattern channels impact vibration away from your ears to produce a slightly softer, yet still crisp, solid sound with good feel.

GM Verdict: Certainly one of the best feeling putter ranges on the market with a premium finish that oozes class. Rolls the ball nicely while the impressive Stroke Lab shaft assists with the overall feel and squaring of the face.

Mizuno M.Craft

Mizuno-M-craft-putters-low-res-web

Key Tech: The range features three head shapes forged from premium 1025 mild carbon steel then CNC milled to create the most precise shape. At 355 grams, each putter head promotes a fluid, rhythmical putting stroke. However, each putter comes with an additional weight kit containing two 3-gram weights and two 13-gram weights that can be interchanged with the 8 gram fitted weights to adjust the feel. Each head style is available in white satin, blue ION or black ION finishes.

GM Verdict: Lacks forgiveness and variety in shapes available but the blue finish stands out sharply from the grass and many will enjoy the soft feel these putters provide. Adjustable weight kit helps golfers match the spec to their tempo or feel preferences.

Cleveland Frontline

Cleveland-Frontline-Elevado-web

Key Tech: Tungsten Forward Weighting positions the CG closer to the face for better stability through impact and straighter, more accurate putts. Normalised speed across the face enhances forgiveness. Four head shapes available.

GM Verdict: We love the feel and shape of the stock Lamkin Sink Cup grip as well as the forgiveness. The deep face milling meant we had to give putts a little more power to reach the hole, but these putters provide excellent value at £149 RRP.

Evnroll ER

Key Tech: A unique mill pattern on the face delivers uniform performance from different strikes in terms of both distance and accuracy. A variety of blades and mallets, including the new ER10 Outback not pictured, are available in two finishes available.

GM Verdict: Arguably the most forgiving range on the market. The ER10 Outback we tested was consistent on all lengths of putt and very easy to set square to the target. Didn’t provide the speed off the face we were hoping for and we couldn’t get on with the shape of the Gravity Grip, but you may have a different experience.

Rife Riddler

Key Tech: The Rife Riddler is made from 304 stainless plumbers blade steel and has Rife’s milled face system known as Roll Groove Technology. It is also heel shafted and has a finely tuned weight and balance to ensure roll and consistency.

GM Verdict: The black PVD plated finish looks smart, rolls the ball nicely and the feel of the stock grip is excellent. Lacks forgiveness on longer putts but still offers excellent value at £79.99.

Scotty Cameron Phantom X

Scotty Cameron Phantom X Putters Review

Key Tech: Replacing the Futura line family from Scotty Cameron comes the new Phantom X putters which are said to be his most technically advanced models ever. Featuring a multi material construction, all the putters have precision milled solid aluminium faces which are integrated with 303 stainless steel heads containing enhanced vibration dampening technology.

GM Verdict: These elegant putters will mostly suit current mallet users, those with straighter strokes or golfers that prioritise a forgiving, stable clubhead that is easy to align. They will also unquestionably add a touch of class to any bag.

Ping Sigma 2

Ping Sigma 2 Putters Review

Key Tech: The Sigma 2 putters have a focus on a softer feel and feature a ground-breaking adjustability system for shaft length. The softer, more responsive feel comes dual-durometer (two hardnesses) Pebax face material.

GM Verdict: The beauty of the Sigma 2 putters is that you can make subtle adjustments to the putter’s length until you settle on what feels the best – there are markings on the shaft to tell you which length you’ve chosen. The soft feel is noticeable. They strike the perfect balance of feeling soft, with a muted sound that’s almost inaudible on very short putts, while feeling solid and still getting the ball rolling with good speed.

The ball-retrieval feature on the Fetch model is clever and certainly works, although you are required to push down quite hard into the cup to get the ball to stick.

Bettinardi-BB-Series-2020-web

Key Tech: Each is crafted from soft carbon steel, precision-milled to 350 grams and given an optimised Super-Fly Face Milling for a responsive feel. As well as the new, durable Glacier Black finish. Four shapes available.

GM Verdict: They look great and have excellent feel thanks to the milling on the face.

PXG Gen2

Key Tech: All eight head shapes can be custom configured with the hosel that best suits your stroke. A new variable-sized pyramid face pattern creates more consistent launch and roll.

GM Verdict: The variety in models is a plus and will suit all manner of golfer. The fine tuning on offer from PXG is second to none as well and they feel soft yet solid.

What To Consider

Shaft length
The length of your putter will dictate your posture and, in turn, where your eyes are at address. Getting it right will help your alignment.

Head type
Ideally yours should suit your swing arc, plus your strengths and weaknesses. Mallets tend to offer extra stability and alignment assistance, but can feel to cumbersome for some, especially ‘feel’ putters.

Your preferences
Putting is a confidence game, so you need to like the shape, finish and sightlines on your putter, as well as its weight, sound and feel.
